Abstract

PURPOSE:To enlarge an effective surface area and enhance catalytic activity by impregnating an inorganic carrier with a solution containing an organic acid which forms more than 0.9mol per mol of iron atoms and a complex, with a pH value of more than 4, and baking the carrier. CONSTITUTION:A solution containing an organic acid, such as citric, oxalic or tartaric acid, which amounts to more than 0.9mol per 1mol. of iron atoms and forms a complex with iron and also having a pH value larger than 4 is prepared. An inorganic carrier is impregnated with the above-mentioned solution containing ferrate and is sintered to obtain an iron-supported catalyst. Solvent- soluble nitrate, sulfate, or citrate is used as ferrate. Water and alcohol are used as a solvent. The preferable amount of an organic acid which forms a complex with iron is equivalent to 0.9-0.2mol per mol of carbon atoms in an impregnation liquid. The catalyst obtained consists of a stable complex formed by iron ions and an organic acid and as such penetrates into the interior of a carrier so that the catalyst is uniformly carried over the entire carrier.
