PURPOSE:To display the used-up state of a battery continuously only by applying a voltage temporarily, by using an electrochromic display element as a display element. CONSTITUTION:The voltage of a battery 1 is also supplied to a consumption detecting part 2. The voltage of the battery 1 is compared with a predetermined reference voltage. Thus the consumption of the battery is detected. The detecting part 2 functions as a voltage switch, which applies a voltage to an electrochromic display part 3 when the voltage of the battery is lower than the reference voltage. The display can be maintained for a long period only by applying the voltage temporarily when the consumption of the battery is detected, by using the electrochromic display element as the display element of the display part 3. Therefore, the used-up state of the battery is continuously displayed without accelerating the power consumption of the battery, which is in the consumed state.
