Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a brazing material for firmly bonding sintered bodies of cubic boron nitride to each other by prepg. the brazing material consisting primarily of Al and contg. specified proportions of Ni, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, and Ta. CONSTITUTION:A brazing material consisting primarily of Al, and contg. 2-10wt.% Ni and 0.5-5wt.% at least one kind selected from Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb and Ta is prepd. The brazing material is interposed between bonding surfaces of each sintered body of cubic boron nitride in the form of powder or foil, and heated in high vacuum <=10<-3>Torr degree of vacuum or in inert gas atmosphere, at 650-750 deg.C. By this method, sintered bodies of cubic boron nitride are bonded firmly to each other without generating fine cracks due to thermal stress nor causing degradation of characteristics.
