Abstract

PURPOSE:To make a load resistance controllable for a photodetector, by composing the photodetector and FET connected in series with the photodetector and next by varying a bias between a gate and a source in the FET. CONSTITUTION:A photodetector PD is used to convert a light input into an electrical signal. An FETQ1 is connected in series with the photodetector PD, and it functions as a load resistance for the photodetector PD. The load resistance for the photodetector PD can be controlled by varying a bias between a gate and a source of the FET. Since an equivalent resistance of an FETQ2 is thus used as the load for the photodetector PD to make a channel conductance of the FETQ2 variable by the use of the external bias, the load resistance for the photodetector PD can be arbitrarily controlled. The equivalent resistance value Rds of the FETQ1 serving as the load resistance for the one photodetector PD is thus changed by varying a voltage Vgg applied to the gate of the FETQ1. In the case of a low-speed signal, the Vgg is made high to enlarge the resistance value Rds so that reception sensitivity is upgraded and besides its band width is limited. In the case of a high-speed signal, the Vgg is made small to lower the resistance value Rds that the reception sensitivity is downgraded to make the bandwidth large.
