Abstract

PURPOSE:To make high-voltage interruption operable easily by disposing an intermediate electrode so that it faces a tip part of a movable electrode during the opening of both contacts and it faces an extinction plate and it covers both the tip part and the extinction plate. CONSTITUTION:A positive column of an arc generated between contacts 3 and 4 during the opening of the contacts is attracted in the direction of an extinction plate 6 by a magnetic action of the plate 6. Gases of high temperature and of high pressure is generated from the positive column of the arc, and these gases are made to flow outward from an extinction chamber while temperature of them is being lowered by adiabatic expansion. The flow of them upward the extinction chamber is not interrupted midway because of a U-shaped flow on the plate 6, and they are made to impinge directly on a surface of an intermediate electrode 10 since the upper part of the extinction chamber is covered with this electrode 10. Consequently the gases receive adiabatic compression in the vicinity of the electrode 10 and so temperature rises. When an arc foot on a fixed contact 3 is carried to an arc runner 11, the positive column is tried to move to the inner part of the plate 6 by a magnetic action of the plate 6, so that two arcs are generated between a tip part 9 and the electrode 10 and between the electrode 10 and the runner 11 respectively. Accordingly high- voltage interruption can be operated easily.
