Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce shaft-shaped parts having necessary strength while omitting heat treatment twice, by rolling a steel contg. a regulated total amt. of O and Al2O3, specified amts. of B and Ti, cold forging the rolled steel as rolled and carrying out hardening by high frequency heating under specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:A steel consisting of, by weight, 0.23-0.35% C, 0.30-0.90% Mn, <=0.15% Si, 0.20-0.50% Cr, <=0.015% S, 0.0004-0.0030% B, 0.01-0.03% Ti, <=0.0015% O, <=0.0010% Al2O3 and the balance Fe and satisfying an inequality 0.40<=C+(Si+Cr)/5+Mn/6<=0.60 is rolled and cold forged as rolled. After the steel is mechanically worked into shaft-shaped parts, the parts are hardened by high frequency heating at a temp. between the Ar1 transformation point and 1,100 deg.C for 2-15sec. Thus, the total amt. of oxide type inclusions is regulated, induction hardenability is ensured by the addition of B, and nitrogen in the steel is fixed by Ti, so strength necessary for the parts can be ensured.
