Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a highly water-absorbing composite synthetic fiber of high mechanical strength suitable for e.g. the adsorption and elimination of heavy metals and the like in industrial effluents by coating a polymer in the form of a core yarn with a mixture of a hydrophilic group-contg. crystalline polymer and a highly hydrophilic noncrystalline polymer followed by drying and crystallization. CONSTITUTION: This composite synthetic fiber 3 with dimensional stability and high mechanical strength even in highly wet state is obtained by coating a polymer in the form of a core yarn 2 (pref. monofilament of polyvinyl alcohol or the like) with a highly concentrated solution 1 containing a hydrophilic group- contg. crystalline polymer (pref. polyvinyl alcohol with a polymerization degree of 1,700 and saponification degree of 98-100%, or the like) and a highly hydrophilic noncrystalline polymer (pref. polyvinylpyrrolidone with an average molecular weight of 80×10<4> , or the like) followed by drying and then crystallization (pref. treatment at 200-230 deg.C for 30 s to 10 min).
