Abstract

PURPOSE: To expand a deflection angle range per image so that the recording and reading of images of large sizes can be executed by scanning the two beams deflected by surface acoustic waves laterally on a surface to be scanned, thereby deflecting the light beams which are once deflected by the surface acoustic waves further by another surface acoustic waves.
CONSTITUTION: A light guide 12 and linear diffraction grating IGC for incidence and emission of the light beams are formed on a substrate of an optical deflector and first and second inclined finger chirp crossed comb type electrode pairs IDTs 17, 18 are disposed on this substrate. The IDTs 17, 18 are scanned by sweepers 20, 20' to generate the first and second surface acoustic waves 15, 16 intersected with each other by progressing in the guide 12. The guided light rays are diffracted and deflected. The diffracted and guided two light beams are further diffracted and deflected by the surface acoustic waves 26 which are generated by another third and fourth inclined finger chirp IDTs 27, 28, by which the deflection angle range per image is expanded.
