Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a magnetic recording medium which has excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics particularly at short wavelengths and has excellent traveling durability and more particularly still durability by specifying the relation between the shapes and planar ratios of planar barium ferrite ferromagnetic powder and planar inorg. powder in a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The planar barium ferrite ferromagnetic powder having 0.01-0.5mum particle size and the planar inorg. powder are incorporated into the magnetic layer and the ratio (R=Rm/Rn) between the planar ratio (Rm) of the ferromagnetic powder and the planar ratio (Rn) of the inorg. powder is specified to the value within a 0.1-1.0 range. The planar barium ferrite ferromagnetic powder is hexagonal and has preferably 2-15 planar ratio (Rm). The planar inorg. powder is preferably the inorg. powder having 0.2-0.8mum particle size and 10-30 planar ratio (Rn). The magnetic recording medium which excels in both the electromagnetic conversion characteristics and the running durability and still durability and wears a magnetic head to an extremely less extent is thereby obtd.
