Abstract
PURPOSE:To form a fine groove having small depth with high accuracy on the soft layer of a hard base plate by setting the angle of a first front flank serving as a rake surface and a second cutting edge with respect to a second front flank serving as the first front flank and a first cutting edge at 90 deg. or more and less than 180 deg.. CONSTITUTION:A diamond tool 11 is held in such a way that its first cutting edge 14 firstly comes into contact with a soft layer 18, so that a hard base plate 17 is elastically deformed, while a vertical load is applied on the tool 11 in such a way that its second cutting edge 15 comes into contact with the hard base plate 17. As a result, the whole face of a first front flank 12 in the tool 11 comes into contact with the surface of the hard base plate 17 and as well as the partial face of a second front flank 13 therein comes into contact with the surface of the hard base plate 17, thereby remarkably increasing the area of the edge of the diamond tool in contact with the surface of the hard base plate 17. Therefore, compressive stress acting on the second cutting edge 15 is significantly reduced so that any minute breakage may not occur on the hand base plate 17, thereby forming a fine groove having small depth while keeping the corner and fillet radii of the second cutting edge 15 sharp.
