Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the title highly pure and water-soluble compound which is usable as a raw material of cosmetics and medicine and capable of serving as a substitute for hyaluronic acid, by allowing diglycolicanhydride to react with chitosan. CONSTITUTION:Chitosan (A) obtained by deacetylation of chitin is reacted with 1-20-fold mol of diglycolic anhydride(B) in water and/or an organic solvent such as methanol at room temp. -50 deg.C for 2-48hr. The reaction product is neutralized and an unreacted component B is removed by a treatment such as dialysis to obtain the title compound represented by the formula (wherein M is H or alkali metal and n is 50-5000).
