Abstract

PURPOSE:To avoid problems of coloration and reduction in economically producing glass contg. a large arm. of heavy metal and in producing bulk glass by using corpuscular or colloidal silica as an indispensable raw material in place of org. substance and by adding glass raw material to it to produce sol. CONSTITUTION:An aq. soln. or corpuscle of the corpuscular or colloidal silica, water and one or more kinds of alkali (earth) metal salt, borate, phosphate, etc., and an aq. soln. or corpuscles of heavy metal compd. are uniformly mixed to prepare the sol. After gelling by adding an aq. alkali soln. or heating, the gel is dried and calcined at a low temp. to produce glass. According to this method, it is possible that a large amt. of heavy metal is contained in the glass, because of calcining at a low temp. Besides, the glass is economically produced, because expensive org. substances such as metal alkoxides and alcohols are not used, and problems of coloration and reduction can be also avoided in producing bulk glass, because no decomposition and incomplete disappearance of the used org. substance take place in the center of gel.
