Abstract
PURPOSE:To mass-produce the title high-performance heat insulating material having excellent heat insulating performance, easiness in handling, and packability by moistening the surface of a rolled carbon black pellet with the atomized soln. of a thermosetting resin, then curing the resin component, roasting and carbonizing the component. CONSTITUTION:The granulated carbon black pellets 2 are charged in a rotary cylindrical vessel 1, and the vessel 1 is rotated to roll the pellets. The soln. of a thermosetting resin such as a soln. of the precondensate of a phenolic or furan-based resin in a volatile org. solvent is atomized by the gas introduced from a bypass 3, and sprayed from an injection pipe 4 to moisten the surface of the pellet 2. The pellet 2 is rolled in an inert gas current, heated at >=20 deg.C/min to a temp. below 200 deg.C, and kept at that temp. for >=30min. Consequently, the resin component at the surface layer part is cured. The pellet is then roasted at >=1000 deg.C in a nonoxidizing gas current to carbonize the cure resin layer.
