Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture an electrical double-layered capacitor having a thin aluminum layer in a short stage and to reduce the cost thereof to a greater extent by cladding high-purity aluminum on austenitic stainless steel products in an overlay state at a specific thickness ratio. CONSTITUTION:The aluminum having >=99.99% purity is clad to the austenitic stainless steel products in the overlay state at 13-30% thickness ratio. The good-quality electrical double-layered capacitor having the thin aluminum layer is obtd. as compared to the conventional method for manufacturing the electrical double-layered capacitor by plasma thermal spraying of aluminum powder on an active carbon fiber fabric at 100-300mum thickness. The leakage of an electrolyte to be injected therein is prevented by the spring characteristic of the stainless steel. The process for the production thereof is, therefore, shortened to a greater extent and the cost is considerably reduced. The contact resistance may be decreased by forming a nickel layer on the stainless steel side of the clad material by plating or cold rolling joining.

[Prior Art] Conventionally, electric double layer capacitors maintain good ohmic contact between the polarizable electrodes made of activated carbon fiber cloth, the case, and the closing plate, and take out the electric charge accumulated in the polarizable electrodes made of activated carbon fiber cloth. In order to achieve high efficiency and lower internal resistance, a method has been adopted in which an aluminum metal layer of 100 to 300 μm in thickness is provided as a conductive electrode layer on one side of an activated carbon fiber cloth.

This aluminum metal layer is formed by directly forming aluminum powder on the activated carbon fiber cloth by plasma spraying. Thereafter, it is punched out to a desired size, used as a polarizable electrode of activated carbon fiber cloth, and after injecting an electrolyte, a separator is attached to the casing to form an electric double layer capacitor.

[Problems to be Solved by the Invention] However, in order to make a conventional electric double layer capacitor, (1) plasma spraying aluminum powder directly onto the activated carbon fiber cloth, which will become the polarizable electrode, to form an aluminum metal layer. The cost was high because it was coated to a thickness of 100 to 300 μm.
