Abstract

PURPOSE:To clearly read an image in the vicinity of a part of an original close to its binding margin part in making a book by moving a detector part in a plane perpendicular to the main scanning direction of a sensor, and making the part rotatable around the axis in the main scanning direction. CONSTITUTION:A pair of distance sensors 19 mounted on the detector part 1 respectively measure distances to an original. The inclination of the part 1 against the surface of the original is measured, and the rotating axis 2 is rotated by a motor 3 through a transmission belt 4, to control the detector part 1 to be perpendicular to the surface of the original. By using focus signals, the distance from the line image sensor 13 to the surface of the original is controlled. Consequently, image of the original formed by a lens 14 can be read successively.

First, in order to read a document such as a book, the document 12 is placed face down on the document table 11. Thereafter, in response to a reading start command, the lamp 15 of the detection unit 1 is turned on and moved in the X direction (sub-scanning direction) along the guide rod 17 by the drive wire 18. At this time, the original image formed by the lens 14 is read by sequentially scanning the line image sensor 13 in the y direction (main scanning) at an appropriate timing.

The distance from the detection unit 1 to the document surface can be measured by finding the average value of both signals (called the focus signal), and the distance from the detection unit 1 to the document surface can be measured by finding the difference between the two signals (called the tilt signal). The inclination of the image relative to the original surface can be measured. Using this tilt signal, the rotation shaft 2 is rotated by the motor 3 via the transmission belt 4, and the detection unit 1 can be controlled perpendicular to the document surface. In addition, by turning the drive screw 7 using the focus signal, the holder 5 is moved up and down along the guide shaft 6, and the line image sensor of the detection unit l is moved up and down along the guide shaft 6.
13 to the document surface can be controlled. Therefore, while performing the above-mentioned tilt control and focus control according to the reading start command, the detecting unit 1 detects the tangential direction of the document surface.
By controlling the speed in the sub-scanning direction, the document imaged by the lens 14 can be sequentially read by sequentially scanning the line image sensor 13 in the main-scanning direction at appropriate timings. At this time, if the three drive units are appropriately controlled based on their mechanical configurations, the above-mentioned tilt control, focus control, and sub-scanning direction speed control can be achieved simultaneously.

As described above, according to the present embodiment, there is provided a detection unit having a sequential scanning sensor that converts image information into an electrical signal, and a detection unit that holds the detection unit in space and is perpendicular to the main scanning direction of the sensor. By including a drive unit that can move the detection unit within the plane and rotate the detection unit around an axis in the main scanning direction, the binding margin can be clearly read even when the original is bound into a book. Moreover, even when reading continuously, the book can be placed face up, so it can be read without having to move the book each time.
