Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the color of the foundation approximately uniform to make display patterns easy to see, by arranging a color filter of plural colors on all of the surface of an electrode substrate on which pattern display electrodes are formed. CONSTITUTION:A color filter 5 where blue, green, and red stripe filters 5b, 5g, and 5r are formed in order repeatedly in the longitudinal direction is arranged on all of the surface of an upper substrate 1 on which segment electrodes 3 are formed. That is, the color filter 5 is formed on not only segment electrodes 3 but also a glass plate, where segment electrodes 3 do not exist, on the inside surface of the upper substrate 1. By this constitution, the display pattern of number '3' is made easy to see because non-lit segment part B and a non- segment part C of segment electrodes 3 on the display face have the same color and it is difficult to distinguish them from each other.

FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional configuration diagram of a main part showing an example of a color liquid crystal display device (unpublished) that displays the same pattern in a plurality of different colors. In the same figure, segment electrodes 3 and common electrodes 4 made of transparent conductive films are formed on the opposing surfaces of upper and lower substrates 1.2 made of transparent glass plates, respectively, and on these segment electrodes 3. A color filter 5 in which stripe filters 5b, 59, and 5r of three colors of blue, green, and red are repeatedly formed in order is arranged, and a predetermined space between these upper and lower substrates 1 and 2 is arranged. A spacer-containing sealing material 6 is used to seal the periphery of the envelope at a distance to form an envelope.
(Twi5ted Nematic) A liquid crystal display element 8 is constructed by enclosing a liquid crystal 7. Further, on the outer surface of this liquid crystal display element 8, that is, on the outer surface of the upper and lower substrates 1.degree.2, upper and lower polarizing plates 9,
10 are arranged to constitute a color display liquid crystal display device.

In the color display liquid crystal display device configured in this way, for example, in the case of blue display, by applying a predetermined voltage between the segment electrode on which the blue stripe filter 5b is superimposed and the common Tm pole, By changing the optical properties of the upper substrate 1, that is, by transmitting the light incident on the liquid crystal portion corresponding to the blue stripe filter 5b.
FAn can be displayed as a blue display pattern from the side.

Furthermore, a green display pattern and a red display pattern can be displayed in the same manner. Furthermore, white display can be achieved by simultaneously applying a predetermined voltage between the segment electrodes and common electrodes corresponding to the blue stripe filter 5b, the green stripe filter 5f, and the red stripe filter 5r. In this way, many colors can be displayed by combining each color.
