本考案は液晶層内に透光性のカラーフイルター

〈従来技術〉
従来、液晶層内に透光性の3原色カラーフイル
ターを組み込みカラーテレビの原理を応用してフ
ルカラー表示を行なう種々の形態のカラー液晶表
示装置が提案されている。従来のこの種のカラー
液晶表示装置の概略の構成を第1図に示す。同図
でAはTN(ツイストネマチツク)型のもの、B
はGH(ゲストホスト)型のものであり互いに分
割して示されている。1,1′は対向する上下の
ガラス基板、2,2′はマトリクス構造に組まれ
た透明導電膜、3は透明導電膜2上に帯状に付着
された透光性のカラーフイルター層、4,4′は
液晶分子配向用絶縁層、5は液晶、6は染料、
7,7′は偏光板である。該偏光板7,7′はTN
型液晶であれば上下2枚が配置され、GH型液晶
であれば上側に1枚が配置される。液晶分子は
TN型・GH型共上下ガラス基板1,1′間におい
て90度のツイスト配向がなされ、偏光板7,7′
の偏光方向は夫々液晶分子配向用絶縁層4,4′
に接する液晶分子の分子長軸方向の略直交する方
向の設定されている。上記カラーフイルター層3
の構成は第2図に示す如くである。同図でR,
B,Gは夫々上記透明導電膜2上に付着された
赤、青、緑のカラーフイルター層であり、各カラ
ーフイルター層R,B,Gは帯状に配列される。
第2図の8は1画素を示し、この1画素8がカラ
ーフイルター層R,B,Gの各色及びそれらの混

得る新規・有用なカラー液晶表示装置を提供する

以下本考案に係るカラー液晶表示装置の実施例

第3図は本考案に係るカラー液晶表示装置の一
実施例の電極及びカラーフイルター層の形状を示
す構成説明図である。同図の構成以外の他の構成
部分は第1図と同様でよい。同図で9,10は透
明導電膜によつて構成されたくし形状の上側電極
(第1及び第2の櫛歯状電極)、11は透明導電膜
によつて構成された下側電極である。下側電極1
1は上側電極9,10とは液晶が挿入される間隙
を介して対向し、上側電極9,10の櫛歯方向と
直交する方向へストライプ状に敷設されている。
12,13は上記くし形状の上側電極9,10上
に夫々付着された互いに異なる色の透光性カラー
フイルターである。同図の電極は表示装置全体の
電極の中の画素を構成するものであり、実際には
同図の電極と同一のものがくし形状の上側電極
9,10の歯と直角方向に多数配設されている。
この電極構造では、一方の上側電極9と他方の上
側電極10にそれぞれ独立して駆動電圧が印加さ
れ、駆動電圧の印加された上側電極9,10と下
側電極11との間の電位差によつて液晶の電界効
果を利用した光シヤツタ動作でカラー表示パター
ンが得られる。即ち、櫛形状の上側電極9の歯の
部分に相当する4本の帯状電極9a,9b,9
c,9dへの通電にて所定の色(例えば赤色)の
画素を得、他方くし形状の上側電極10の歯の部
分に相当する4本の帯状電極10a,10b,1
0c,10dへの通電で他の色(例えば青色)の
画素を得、上記くし形状の上側電極9及び10の
4本の帯状電極9a,9b,9c,9d、及び1
0a,10b,10c,10dへの通電で上記2
色の混合色(例えば紫色)の画素を得る。以上の
構成によれば上側電極9と上側電極10とが噛み
合つているので上記3色の色の切換え時において
も画素位置はほとんど変化しない。従つて表示全
体において種々のパターンを構成する場合、各表
示パターンにおいて夫々の画素の連続性は良好で
あり、明瞭な表示を得ることができる。又、混合
色を表示する場合について言えば同一画素中に複
数本の異色の帯状電極が交互に配置されているの
