Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the contrast to improve the visual recognizability by forming one transparent electrode in stripes and arranging red, green, and blue color filters alternately on this transparent electrode and forming the other transparent electrode into shapes of lit characters. CONSTITUTION:A transparent electrode 11 formed in stripes is arranged on a lower glass substrate 10, and red, green, and blue filters 12R, 12G, and 12B are attached alternately onto this electrode 11. A transparent electrode 14 is formed for pattern display of 7 segments or the like for numbers. Orientation control films 15 are arranged on electrodes 11 and 14, and liquid crystal materials 16 are sealed between them. Polarizing plates 17 and 18 are stuck to outsides of transparent glass substrates 10 and 13. Non-lit segment parts has the same color scheme as the display area other than segment parts. Thus, the contrast is improved to improve the visual recognizability.

On the other hand, a transparent electrode 14 is disposed on the upper glass substrate 13 facing the lower glass substrate 10 . It is assumed that the transparent electrode 14 has the shape of a t7 segment as shown in FIG. Furthermore, alignment control films 15 for orienting liquid crystal molecules in a certain direction are disposed on the transparent electrodes of the upper and lower plates, respectively, and a liquid crystal material 16 is sealed between them. Further, a lower polarizing plate 17 is pasted on the outside of the lower glass substrate 1o, and a lower polarizing plate 17 is attached to the outer side of the lower glass substrate 1o.
An upper polarizing plate 18 is also pasted on the outside of 3.

When a rectangular wave voltage is applied to each of the transparent electrodes 11 and 14, the liquid crystal 16 at the intersection of the upper transparent electrode 14 and the lower transparent electrode 11 operates, and the color filters 12 are printed in red, green, and red. Each color of blue can be seen through. Here, depending on how the transparent electrode 11 formed on the lower glass substrate 10 is selected, it is possible to display a single color or an intermediate color, thereby realizing a multicolor liquid crystal display.

In the present invention, when performing multicolor display by forming red, green, and blue color filters on transparent electrodes, the contrast of the lit character shape shown in FIG. 1 is improved by:
In order to increase the contrast difference between the lit segment portion and the non-lit segment portion, dummy color filters were also arranged in stripes in areas outside the 188 lit character images shown in FIG. This dummy color filter is commonly connected to the transparent electrode 11 and is always in a non-lighting state without any rectangular wave voltage being applied thereto. Therefore, the seven segments a, b, c, d, and e shown in FIG.
