従来、鉛蓄電池用ペースト充填装置は、格子の一面から
のみペーストを充填する片面充填装置であった。この片
面充填装置では、ペーストを充填する側の表面のみが平
滑になり、裏面は平滑に仕上らない。このため、密閉型
鉛蓄電池用極板のように、極板両面の平滑性が問題にな
るような極板には、裏面も平滑にする装置が必要であり
だ。また、特に厚形極板においては、片面充填では極板
表裏面で充填のアンバランスが生じ、極板寿命を損ね、
ひいては電池寿命を短寿命iこすることがある。そのた
めに、両面充填方法が提案されているが、それは初めに
裏面に充填する分のペーストをベルトコンベアー上に敷
き、その上に格子を置き、該格子をペースト中に押し込
み、さらに、その上から表面分のペーストを充填する方
法である。このような両面充填方法では、裏面の平滑度
が悪く、また、格子をペースト中に押し込む時、格子が
変形する欠点があった。
