Abstract

PURPOSE:To remove an error cause before recording/reproducing of data by stopping temporarily the cleaning operation and restarting the cleaning operation after the analysis of error contents if a read error of data on a medium is detected when the surface of a magnetic disc is cleaned. CONSTITUTION:If an error is detected in the data read of the servo face of each cylinder, a servo check signal from a status check circuit part 2 is turned on and is latched in a flip flop circuit 4. At this time, an AND circuit 6 calculates AND between two input signals from the flip flop circuit 4 and a flip flop circuit 5 and outputs the result to a cleaning control circuit 7 as a turn-on signal which stops temporarily the cleaning positioning operation. The cleaning control circuit 7 stops temporarily the cleaning positioning operation by the signal input from the AND circuit 6. After the error contents of the servo face are analyzed, the cleaning positioning operation is continued.

(b) Background of the Technology Floating type magnetic heads are often used for magnetic disk drives. The gap between the floating recording medium and the magnetic head is such that the airflow that flows as the magnetic disk rotates does not reach the slider of the magnetic head, and the gap between the hydrodynamic floating blade and the force of the spring that presses the magnetic head against the recording medium. This value is determined by the balance, and ranges from several μm to a fraction of a μm. Therefore, since the adhesion of foreign matter and the infiltration of dust to the magnetic disk surface have an extremely large effect on the reliability of the device, various countermeasures are taken. However, in addition to the adhesion of foreign matter and infiltration of dust, scratches on the magnetic disk surface can cause various errors, so it is necessary to remove foreign matter and dust from the magnetic disk surface before recording/playing data. It is necessary to detect errors caused by scratches on the magnetic disk surface, immediately analyze the cause of the detected error, and eliminate the cause to ensure device reliability. Development of a method is required.

(c) Prior art and problems Normally, the area around the magnetic disk is tightly sealed to prevent foreign matter from adhering to the magnetic disk surface and dust from entering, and a high-precision air filter is installed inside to filter dust. There is also a device that not only constantly sends in the air but also performs a cleaning positioning operation to remove dust attached to the magnetic head or magnetic disk.

This cleaning operation merely involves sequentially positioning the magnetic head in each cylinder to the innermost position before recording/reproducing data on the magnetic disk. This operation allows the adhesion of foreign matter and dust to be removed by the airflow that flows with the rotation of the magnetic disk, but there is a drawback in that the causes of errors such as scratches on the magnetic disk surface cannot be detected and removed.

(e) Structure of the Invention The present invention reads data (servo data) on the magnetic disk medium and detects errors when cleaning the magnetic disk by continuously moving a magnetic head over the magnetic disk. By temporarily stopping the cleaning operation and restarting the cleaning operation after analyzing the error contents, the cause of the error, such as scratches on the magnetic disk surface, can be removed before data recording/reproduction operations are performed. This can be achieved by a data inspection method for a magnetic disk device that can be used.
