Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the rotation wait at a defective part write time and the limit of the nymber of defects by writing defect indication signals on a data track previously and detecting them by an advanced read head which precedes a write head.
CONSTITUTION: When defective part DEF is detected in the test of a magnetic disc, detect start indication signal M1 and defect end indication signal M2 are written before and after the defective part respectively, and advanced read head 4-1 and read/write head 4-2 are provided in head assembly 1. When advanced read head 4-1 reads defect start indication signal M1 at a read/write time, detection circuit 5 detects it to report it to control circuit 2, thereby causing control circuit 2 to stop reading/writing. Next, when advanced read head 4-1 reads defect end indication signal M2, detection circuit 5 detects it to report it to control circuit 2, thereby restarting read/write after a prescribed distance movement.
