Abstract

PURPOSE:To accurately inspect the life of a magneto-optical disk by performing a series of inspecting operations repeatedly up to the number of times specified as an upper limit with respect to a specified track. CONSTITUTION:An inspection signal is recorded on the specified track on the magneto-optical disk and reproduced to check the recording state as a 1st inspection; and recording contents of the track are erased and the track is reproduced to check the unerased signal state as a 2nd inspection. Those inspecting operations are performed repeatedly up to the number of times specified as the upper limit as to the specified track. Namely, if the disk comes to the end of its life before the series of inspecting operations are performed by an many times as specified, a record leak, etc., is detected by checking the unerased signal state thereafter. Further, the unerased record contents are also detected by checking the unerased record state thereafter. If the disk does not come to the end of its life even after the series of inspecting operations are performed by as many times as specified, neither the record leak nor unerased record is detected in each checking operation. Thus, the life of the disk is accurately checked by detecting the record leak or unerased record contents.

Subsequently, in step 103, the number of times the test has been completed at which the test should be temporarily stopped is determined by the host device i! 12. This designation is based on the fact that lifespan inspections are usually not completed in one day.
This is done in order to automatically stop the test when night falls during repeated tests.

After completing the series of tests consisting of steps 105 to 108, it is determined in step 109 whether or not the test has been completed the number of times that should be stopped (the number of times specified in step 103). If not digested, go to step 11

The test is repeated in this way, and when the test has been completed the number of times that should be stopped (i.e., when night comes, as described above), the process proceeds from step 109 to step 111, and the rotation of the disk is stopped. Interrupt the inspection. Then, in step 112, it is determined whether an inspection start command has been issued. If it has not occurred, return to step 111,
Maintain suspension of inspection. When an order to start inspection is issued,
Step 112 returns to step 105, and the inspection of steps 105 to 108 is restarted for the specified track.

In addition, when the inspection is repeated in this way and the inspection is completed the number of times that the inspection should be repeated, the process proceeds from step 110 to step 113 to output the unerased contents of the designated track, and then in step 114 the disk rotates. Stop and finish the inspection.

In the above inspection, if the life of the disk reaches the end of the inspection several times until the inspection in steps 105 to 108 is completed as many times as the inspection should be repeated, then the recording status check in step 106 from then on will detect recording omissions, etc. is detected,
Alternatively, unerased data is detected in the unerased state check in step 108 after that time. On the other hand, if the life of the disk does not come to an end before the tests in steps 105 to 108 are completed the number of times the test should be repeated, step 106

In this embodiment, the test is completed until the end (that is, the number of times the test is repeated) regardless of whether recording omissions or unerased data are detected in the checks at steps 106 and 108. However, if a recording omission or an unerased error is detected in the checks in steps 106 and 108, the inspection may be terminated at that stage (this is referred to as the second mode). Furthermore, it may be possible to select whether to perform the inspection in the first mode or the second mode by an instruction from the host device 12 or by operating the mode selection means 14.
