【発明の詳細な説明】
本発明は、長波長赤外光の吸収が小さい金属ハロゲン化
物、ヒ素セレンガラス等の赤外透過物質をコア及びクラ
ッドの素材として用いることにより、大出力レーザー光
を低損失で伝送できるようにした赤外用光ファイバーと
その製造方法に関する。

近年、レーザー光を応用した機器の研究開発の成果には
目を見はるものがあり、光通信、各種物品のレーザー加
工の技術分野にはもとより、医療機器の分野でも、レー
ザーメスあるいは、痣治療器として成果が実現されてい
る。

各種レーザーのうちCO2レーザーは、10μ前後の赤
外領域での光エネルギーが非常に大きく、しかも、その
波長が水の赤外吸収域にあるため、水分を含んだ物の加
工、つまり紙とか布の切断加工、生物体の加工等に有効
である。

射を利用して、目的物まで導ひいている。

各種装置の簡易化やをり扱い易さ等大きな効果が期待さ
れる。

が進みつつあり、ここでも赤外用光ファイバーの開発が
望まれている。

しかし、高出力の赤外レーザー光を低損失で安全に伝送
できる赤外用光ファイバーの製造は、後述する通り、実
際上極めて難しい。

例えば、石英ガラス、ソーダ石灰ガラス等を素材とする
ガラス系の光ファイバーは、第1図に示すように、高屈
折率のコア材とその外周を覆う低屈折率のクラツド材と
からなる適当太さのプリフォーム(母材)aを作製し、
これをヒーターbで加熱溶融して、所望の直径となるよ
うに線引きすることによって、連続的に製造できるが、
これらガラス系の元ファイバーによる赤外光の伝送は、
2〜3μが長波側の限界であり、吸収損失による光ファ
イバーの発熱、焼損防止、バンドピースで必要とするエ
ネルギーレベルの確保等を考慮すると、実用範囲での長
波側限界はせいぜい1.5μであり、CO2レーザーを
用いることはできない。

そして、この界面が乱れると、界面凹凸部では、赤外光
が臨界角を越えてクラッドf外に洩出るといった散乱損
失が生じ、しかも、C02レーザーのように光エネルギ
ーが大きい場合には、上記の散乱損失によって洩れた光
によってクラッドfやケーブル(図示せず)が焼損し、
危険でもある。

本発明は、かかる現状に鑑みてなされたもので、その目
的は、高出力レーザー光を低損失で安全に伝送できる赤
外用光ファイバーと該光ファイバーを能率よく製造でき
る製造方法を提供することにある。

以下、本発明の実施例を図面に基づいて詳述する。
第5図、第6図は、本発明に係る赤外用光ファイバーの
製造に用いるプリフォーム1を示し、2は高屈折率の金
属ハロゲン化物よりなるコア材、3は低屈折率の金属ハ
ロゲン化物よりなるクラツド材、4はクラツド材3の外
周を覆う潤滑材であり、これら2,3,4は同窓円状を
呈する。

上記のプリフォーム1は、コア材2とクラツド材3を各
別に成形し、クラツド材3に機械加工して、その内部に
コア材2を挿入して作製されており、コア材2及びクラ
ツド材3の材料ならびに、潤滑材4の層を有する点でガ
ラス系のプリフォームと相違する。

金属ハロゲン化物としては、周期律表(短周期型)のI
a族、Ib族、■a族に属する物質のうち、次に列挙す
るものが使用可能であり、これらの物質を、例えばコア
材2にAgRr1クラッド材3にAg(Jを用いるとい
ったように、コア材2の屈折率n1とクラツド材3の屈
折率n2とが、nl>12となる条件を満たす範囲内で
、任意に組合せて使用される。

また、潤滑材4としては、テフロン、ポリエチレン等の
ポリマーやBN(窒(ボロン)等の固体潤滑材が使用さ
れる。

但し、コア材2、クラツド材3の少なくとも一方がIa
族の物質である場合、その融点(600C〜900℃)
が上記ポリマーの融点(150℃〜250C)より大幅
に高いため、上記ポリマーを使用することはできない。

即ち、コア材2やクラツド材3の素材として、Ib族や
Ia族の物質(融点450℃前後)を選定した場合には
潤滑材4として、上記ポリマー、固体潤滑材のいずれを
使用してもよいが、Ia族の物質を選定した場合には、
これを加熱軟化した際、上記ポリマーでは分解されるた
め、BN等の固体潤滑材を使用するのである。
Ia族の物質(融点450℃前後)を選定した場合には
潤滑材4として、上記ポリマー、固体潤滑材のいずれを
使用してもよいが、Ia族の物質を選定した場合には、
これを加熱軟化した際、上記ポリマーでは分解されるた
め、BN等の固体潤滑材を使用するのである。
次に、本発明に係る赤外用光ファイバーの製造方法を第
7図に基づいて説明する。

■ダイス8として順次、内径の小さなものを使用し、金
属パイプ5が目標とする所定の径になるまで、次々と線
引きを繰返すことによって、第8図に示すような、コア
2Aとクラッド3Aとその外周に位置する潤滑材4なら
びに金属パイプ5とからなる断面円形の赤外用光ファイ
バーを得る。

尚、上記の各線引きは、冷間加工であり、金属ハロゲン
化物の融点よりも適当温度(例えば100〜200℃)
低い温度であれば、室温で行なってもよく、ヒーター等
で加熱して行なってもよい。

さらに金属ハロゲン化物以外の赤外透過物質としてZn
5e、ZnTe等の半導体やヒ素セレンガラス等のカル
コゲナイドガラスを用いることができる。

本発明は、以上の構成よりなり、コア材2及びクラツド
材3の素材として金属ハロゲン化物を使用し乍らも、プ
リフォーム1を金属パイプ5に封入するため、線引きを
行なえるのであり、線引き加工の際には、金属パイプ5
の引っばりに伴って、ダイス8内周から軸芯に向かう力
がプリフォーム1に加えられ、その結果、プリフォーム
1は、全周にわたって均等に締付けられて、金属パイプ
内は真空引じされて空気を除去しであるためコア、クラ
ッド層の密着性を保ちながら同心円状に縮径し、しかも
金属パイプ5とクラツド材3とは潤滑材4によって摩擦
抵抗が低減され、滑りやすくなっているので、金属パイ
プ5の伸びに起因する軸芯方向の摩擦力によってクラツ
ド材3の悪影響を及ぼすことがない。

従って、赤外用光フアイバー内部の断面形状はプリフォ
ーム1と相似形を保ち、コア2A、クラッド3Aの界面
に乱れが生じない。

また、線引き加工を可能にするための金属パイプ5が赤
外用光ファイバーの機械的強度を確保する補強部材や保
護部材となるので、コアークラッド構造をもつ光ファイ
バーの製造と、そのケーブル化が同時に行なわれること
になる。

このようにして製造された赤外用光ファイバーは、金属
ハロゲン化物を素材とするコアークラッド構造を有し、
コア2A、クラッド3Aの界面が平滑であるため、CO
2レーザーを低損失で伝送でき、万一、ファイバーが破
損しても、周囲を金属パイプ5で覆っであるため、安全
である。

しかも、反応性の高い金属ハロゲン化物を素材とするク
ラッド3Aがポリマー等の潤滑材4で覆われており、金
属パイプ5に接触しないため、金属パイプ5の腐蝕が防
止されるのである。

Claims (1)
- 【特許請求の範囲】 1 赤外透過物質よりなるコアと、該コアより屈折率が
低い赤外透過物質よりなるクラッドと、クラッドの外周
に設けた潤滑材ならびに金属パイプとからなる赤外用光
ファイバー。 2 赤外透過物質よりなるコア材と、該コア材より屈折
率が低い赤外透過物質よりなるクラツド材と、クラツド
材の外周を覆う潤滑材とからなるプリフォームを作製し
、該プリフォームを金属パイプ中に真空封じして、融点
以下の温度で線引きすることを特徴とする赤外用光ファ
イバーの製造方法。
