PURPOSE:To perform correct translation, by providing a complex sentence analyzer so that the relations between phrases and clauses of Japanese sentences can correctly be determined. CONSTITUTION:A complex sentence analyzer 1 is provided with a determining device 2 for the connection and relation of phrases and clauses and a processor 3 for participial modification. The device 2 is provided with a Japanese word dictionary 4, a grammer dictionary 5 and a dictionary 6 for significance to determine which phrases and clauses are modified ones. The processor 3 forms a sentence C' in which Joshi (postpositional word functioning as an auxiliary to a main word) of a sentence C is changed into the Joshi for the suggestion of topic, when a sentence B which can be a predicate of a sentence A can be a participial modification sentence of the sentence C, and if the connection is established between the sentences C' and B, the sentence B is regarded as the related sentence to the sentence C.
