PURPOSE:To obtain a sticky and fixable polarizing plate for a liq. crystal display element capable of performing a whitened fixed display without applying a voltage by stretching polyvinyl alcohol with iodine adsorbed thereon and irradiating the resulting polarizer with ultraviolet rays to sublime and remove iodine in the form of a desired pattern. CONSTITUTION:A polarizer 12 is obtd. by stretching polyvinyl alcohol and has iodine adsorbed on the whole surface. A stainless steel mask 5 having a formed desired pattern is mounted on the polarizer 12, and the polarizer 12 is irradiated with ultraviolet rays from carbon arc 6 through the mask 5 for 20min. At the irradiated part iodine is sublimed and removed, and the part is deprived of the polarizing power. Supports 3 made of cellulose triacetate are then adhered to both sides of the patterned polarizer 12, and by coating one side of the resulting polarizing plate 11 with a pressure sensitive adhesive 4, a sticky polarizing plate enabling a whitened fixed display can be formed.
