Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance at a low cost in high purity and yield, by rearranging a furan derivative in a solvent, e.g. water or water-dihydric alcohol to give a cyclopentenone, isomerizing the cyclopentenone, and reducing the resultant 4-hydroxy cyclopentenone.
CONSTITUTION: A furan derivative of formulaI(R1 is H, alkyl or alkenyl; R3 is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, thienyl or aralkyl) is rearranged in a solvent, e.g. water or water-dihydric alcohol, in the presence or absence of a catalyst, e.g. various metallic salts, to give a compound of formula II, which is then adjusted to a pH of preferably 4.5W13 and then rearranged to afford a compound of formula III. The resultant compound of formula III is then reduced with a metal- acid, e.g. zinc, iron, etc. -dilute hydrochloric acid or formic acid, to give a compound of formula IV (R2 is R3 which is not alkynyl).
USE: A high-class perfume.
