Abstract

PURPOSE:To make the flame state of a burner independent of the internal pressure of a reactor by specifying the ratios of the cross-sectional area of the reactor to that of a gaseous flow spouted from the nozzle of the burner and that of a glass base material, and the position of an exhaust port in a vapor axial deposition method. CONSTITUTION:A reactor 6 having diameter Dh is made >=25 times as large as a gaseous flow having diameter Dn spouted from the nozzle of a burner 1 in cross-sectional area and >=4 times as large as a porous glass base material 2 having diameter Ds in cross-sectional area. An exhaust port is attached to the side of the reactor 6 at a position (yA) >=15 Dn away from the nozzle in the flowing direction of the gaseous flow. Thus, changes in the temp. distribution of a flame 5 within a cross section and in the extent of the temp. fluctuation are inhibited, and the flame 5 is hardly changed even if the internal pressure of the reactor 6 is made uneven to some degree. Accordingly, a change in the refractive index distribution of the resulting optical fiber in the axial direction is almost prevented, and unevenness in the zone characteristics is reduced.
