Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the resistance of a battery with an extremely small diameter of the holes in a separator by making either a polyolefin powder with a mean grain diameter of below a given value, or a mixture prepared by adding a given amount of a silica powder to the former polyolefin powder into a slurry by use of a low-boiling-point liquid, and making a web to be impregnated and coated with this slurry. CONSTITUTION:A low-boiling-point liquid such as water or alcohol is added to either a polyolefin powder with a mean grain diameter of below 10mum, such as polyethylene or polypropylene powder, or a mixture powder consisting of the former polyolefin powder and 5-70wt% of a silica powder such as activated clay or silica powder, thereby making a slurry. A web made of a woven cloth or the like prepared from polyolefin fiber is impregnated with the former slurry, and the web coated with the slurry is dried before it is subjected to calendering, thus a separator for an acid battery is manufactured.
