Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce cast steel products of superior quality having no burning defects on the surface by using a mold molded of olivine sand in casting high manganese steel by a vacuum casting method.
CONSTITUTION: In casting products of superior abrasion resistance such as tooth parts of crushers and abrasion resistant, rails, high manganese cast steel which contains 5W20% Mn, has superior ductility and toughness, and permits the formation of the surface layers of high hardness is used as a material and is cast by a vacuum casting method. If SiO2 is contained much in the composition of a mold, it reacts with the MnO of the casting surface and erodes the mold surface, thereby generating burning defects on the surface of the castings. Hence, the rate of generation of the above-mentioned burning defects is decreased considerably by the use of olivine sand of relatively small contents of SiO2 as a mold material.
