PURPOSE:To inhibit the formation of a deposited material in a furnace and to enable continuous operation over a long period of time, by a method wherein space on the surface of a molten iron bath in an iron bath gasification furnace is filled with a solid carbonaceous material, and coal and a gasifying agent are blown through a non-immersed lance into the furnace to conduct gasification. CONSTITUTION:Coal and a gasifying agent are blown through a non-immersed lance 4 into a molten iron bath 5 stored in a gasification furnace 1. During the operation splash 7 is scattered from the surface of the iron bath, rapidly cooled by a furnace wall, the lance 4, etc., and deposited thereon.
