Abstract

PURPOSE: To control generation of SO2 or H2S in a process for cooling molten blast furnace slag and ensure the high quality of block slag by coating the molten slag surface with fine particles of metal or metal oxide prior to water cooling.
CONSTITUTION: In the early stage of a process for cooling molten blast furnace slag, an aq. suspension of fine particles of metal or metal oxide is sprayed in an amt. corresponding to 4W10 wt% of iron to the S content of the slag to coat the slag surface in a cooling pit. Thus, generation of SO2 is controlled, and then cooling water is sprayed to prevent formation of H2S. As the fine particles, waste discharged from an iron manufacturing process in large quantities, e.g. converter dust or blast furnace dust can be used effectively. The concn. of the suspension is 0.1W1%.
