Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an oil seal having small friction torques, high PV-values and high sealing performance by a method wherein shapes of indentation are specified on an inne surface provided with a plurality of indentations on the side of nonsealing fluid to a seal lip.
CONSTITUTION: In order to obtain a slidable sealed surface S, a seal body 3 is fitted firmly to the inner circumference of a casing 2 penetrated by a shaft 1, and a seal lip 4 on the inner circumference of the seal body 3 is attached to the outer circumference of the shaft 1 under pressure by means of the force of a spring 5. In this case, the edge E of the inner circumfernce on the side of the sealing fluid on the seal lips 4 takes a flat pressure surface on the outer circumference surface of the shaft 1 and on the surface of the nonsealing fluid side of the seal lip 1, there are provided a plurality of indentations in the vicinity of said edge E. These indentations 7 are provided so that one or both sides of a side surface 8 take a sharp angle to the circumference of the shaft and the side circumference surface of each concave part 9 constitutes two sides of a triangle at the cross-section approximately.
