Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a composite membrane having selective permeability to gases and excellent in heat resistance and strength, by a method wherein monomers containing a tertiary carbon atom or a tertiary organosilicon atom are polymerized to form a thin film on a heat-resisting porous support.
CONSTITUTION: A solution of dimethylsiloxane in twice as much methyl ethyl ketone is infiltrated into a porous film of polytetrafluoroethylene resin, and the diluent is evaporated off. The film thus treated is then heated and, after silicone oil expanded to the surface of the film is absorbed by a sponge roller, the film is allowed to cool. After exposing the film to a plasma atmosphere of N2 gas, non-crosslinked silicone oil is extracted with methl ethel ketone. The film is set again in the same plasma device, and 4-methyl-1-pentene vapor is introduced simultaneously with N2 gas to accomplish plasma polymerization. The thus obtained composite membrane has a coefficient of oxygen/nitrogen selective permeation of about 4.2.
