Abstract

PURPOSE:To decrease smoke (soot) contained in exhaust gas from the combustion chamber of a diesel engine in particular, by applying a voltage between an exhaust pipe and an electrode provided at a gas inlet port in the exhaust pipe, to oxidize or transmute the smoke. CONSTITUTION:A center electrode 7 is secured in the center of the exhaust port 5 of an internal combustion engine such as a diesel engine and electrically insulated from an exhaust manifold 6. The electrode part 7a of the center electrode 7 extends coaxially with the port 5 so that the tip of the electrode part 7a is located at the end of the exhaust port 10 of a cylinder head 9. Such a center electrode 7 is provided in each branch of the manifold 6 and connected to a power source E through a distributor 8. A voltage is applied to each center electrode 7 so that soot particles in exhaust smoke just discharged from the combustion chamber of the engine are moved in the electric field. As a result, the soot particles are made finer. At that time, oxidation is accelerated to decrease the soot.
