Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a uniformly thin matrix homogeneously impregnated with phosphoric acid by mixing a matrix body with a phosphoric-acid electrolyte, before the mixture is heated and directly applied to the surface of either a fuel electrode or an oxidizing-agent electrode. CONSTITUTION:Silicon carbide having a grain diameter of 0.1-10mum is added and mixed with 85-100wt% of orthophosphoric acid, before the mixture is heated at 150-200 deg.C and is adequately ground down, thus a homogeneous silicon-carbide phosphoric-acid paste being prepared. Thus prepared paste is applied to the surface of either a fuel electrode or an oxidizing-agent electrode by a brushing method or the like so as to make the paste to be interposed between these electrodes. By the means mentioned above, the internal resistance can be reduced since the electrode is tightly coated with the paste film having a uniformly small thickness. In addition, any gas generation due to a reaction between phosphoric acid and impurities can be prevented by giving sufficiently high bubble pressure to prevent reaction gases from reacting with the paste film, and by subjecting the electrode coated with the paste film to heat treatment process.
