Abstract
PURPOSE: The covered electrode which necessitates a small cell capacity when used for diaphragmless electrolysis, prevents the dectrease in current efficiency along with the increase in the concentration of the product of reaction at the electrolysis and is covered with the intimate mixture of hydrophilic inorganic material and hydrophobic high polymer binder.
CONSTITUTION: The intimate mixture of hydrophilic material (e.g.: asbestos) and water dispersion of hydrophobic high polymer binder (e.g.: polytetrafluoroethylene) is coated on substrate electrode surface and is then pressed and set. Setting of this intimate mixture is accomplished by firing at usually 300W380°C in case the high polymer binder is fluorine resin and it is desirable to accomplish this at room temperature when it is other than fluorine resin. The thickness of the covering layer is usually 1W12mm and particularly 2W10mm. When this covered electrode is used, the substrate electrode is wet with electrolyte in the electrolyte and the phenomenon that the evolved gas releases from the covering fine pores is effected in the state where the electric resistant is lowest. This covered electrode may be used for aqueous solution electrolytic reaction, e.g., reaction of Fe(CN)6 4-→Fe(CN)6 3-, Cr(III)→ Cr(VI), etc.
