CONSTITUTION: An optically active tetralincarboxylic acid ester derivative of formulaI(R1 is H, lower alkyl, benzyl or acetyl; R2 is lower alkyl) is made to react with an alkyl metal derivative of formula II (M is alkali metal atom or alkaline earth metal atom; n is 1 or 2) in a solvent such as dimethylformamide at 0W100°C to obtain the optically active tetralin derivative of formula III, which is converted to the objective compound of formula IV by the reductive desulfurization with an amalgam in the presence of water or with zinc, tin or aluminum under alkaline conditions.
