Abstract

PURPOSE: To simply separate and recover Zr and Hf meeting standard requirements on a nuclear reactor from a mixture of ZrCl4 with HfCl4 by fractionally condensing vapor while feeding the vapor to the middle part of the cooler of a distilling column when the mixture is separated into components by the difference in vapor pressure.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of ZrCl4 with HfCl4 is put in an evaporator 3 and evaporated by heating at ≥450°C under ≥25atm in a furnace 11. The vapor is blown into the middle part of the cooler 7 of a distilling column 4 through valves 13, a liq. phase of ZrCl4 with low HfCl4 concn. is stored in a bottom evaporator 5, and vapor contg. concd. HfCl4 is taken out of the upper part and stored in a storage tank 15. The liq. phase is evaporated by heating with a furnace 20 and stored in a storage tank 19 as a liq. phase contg. <0.01% Hf meeting standard requirements on a nuclear reactor. Vapor of HfCl4 contg. <3% Zr meeting the requirements is obtd. in a storage tank 24. They are reduced to Zr and Hf with metallic Mg, recovered, and used as materials or a nuclear reactor.
