Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate a mixture of ZrCl4 and HfCl4 into high-purity chlorides respectively by the less number of processes without using an expensive chemical agent, by treating the mixture through distillation including differential partical condensation under specific pressure and temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of ZrCl4 and HfCl4 is distilled under about ≥25atm. at ≥ about 450°C in the presence of a liquid phase. In the distillation, almost all prepared vapor is subjected to differential partial condensation by a cooler equipped at the top of a still and returned to the still. The HfCl4 contet in the remaining small part is raised to be in a range to meet the specification of a controlling rod for a nuclear reactor and it is recovered. The reason why the differential partial condensation method has especially improved effect is that since a vapor-liquid volume ratio under the conditions is about 15:1, much smaller than that of ordinary distillation conditions, and the viscosity of the liquid phase is considerably high, the material transfer caused only by vapor-liquid contact is insufficient. And, the reason is also considered that the ratio of vapor pressure of HfCl2 to ZrCl4 is very large, about 2.
