Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber which has optical rotary power and a switching function by making a core part of crystal of a Pb-Ge-O system having a specific atom ratio and by making a cladding part of crystal of a Pb-Ge-Si-O system of glass. CONSTITUTION:A core part 1 is made of crystal of Pb5Ge3O11 (PGO and a cladding part 2 is made of crystal of Pb5Ge3-xSixO11 (O<x<=1), thus obtaining a target optical fiber. The PGO crystal is a ferrodielectric substance and has an axis 3 of spontaneous polarization; and it also has optical rotary power which rotates a plane of polarization in accordance with the propagation of light, and inverts the axis 3 of spontaneous polarization by an external electric field, so the obtained optical fiber has optical rotary power and an optical switching function. In addition, it has piezoelectric effect, which is utilized to provide the fiber itself with various active functions.
