Abstract

PURPOSE: To simplify constitution and achieve miniaturization by forming a light attenuating metal film between the end faces of optical fibers and superposing another metal film for spacer in the non-waveguide region.
CONSTITUTION: A metal film 2 such as of chromium or other is formed through vacuum evaporation or the like on the end face of an optical fiber 1 to provide an attenuating layer. If a metal film 3 for spacer thicker than the film 2 is superposed on the non-waveguide region other than core layer 11a and clad layer 12a on this film 2 through vacuum evaporation and etching or the like and the end face of an optical fiber 4 is bonded via the film 3, then the dispositions of the fibers 1, 4 are automatically determined and the small and easy-to-manufacture light attenuator of the simple constitution may be provided.
