Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce the end of an optical fiber, which has no increase in optical loss even if it is brought into contact with another substance and which can be easily fixed by an adhesive, by coating the core end of the optical fiber, which is exposed by removing the cladding, with a fluoride having a low refractive index. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber having a pastic cladding is prepared of a core 10 of quartz and a cladding 12 of a silicone resin. The cladding 12 is removed from the end of the optical fiber to expose the core 10 to the outside. Then, the core 10 thus exposed is coated with a fluoride of alkali metal such as LiF or NaF and of alkaline earth metal such as MgF2 or CaF2. It is sufficient that the thickness of the coating layer 14 be about 1 micron.
