Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the device simple in constitution and small in size and enable it to be readily produced by acting an electric field or magnetic field upon the liquid interposed in the surfaces of optical fibers which are diagonally cut thereby changing its refractive index.
CONSTITUTION: Transparent electrodes 3, 4 are coated on the diagonal end faces of fibers 1, 2 and liquid crystal 5 is interposed between said electrodes and is applied with electricity from a power source 6. This liquid crystal 5 is able to change the refractive index which light L2 senses when applied with an electric field. Now, the refractive indices of the fibers 1, 2 are assumed to be n and the refractive indices of light of the liquid crystal when not applied with any electric field and when applied with the electric field to be n1, n2. When, for example, n=n1 and n2 is so set that the light L1 totally reflects at the interface of the fiber 1 and liquid crystal 5, then the light L1 is transmitted from the fiber 1 to 2 when no electric field is applied but the light is not transmitted when the electric field is applied. Thereby the function as an interrupter of light may be made simple, with the constitution minaturized and the production facilitated.
