Abstract

PURPOSE:To melt welding materials by the resistance heat of slag and perform electroslag welding without using filler metal by inserting an electrode horizontally into the slag center in a groove, and flowing electric current through molten slag between the same and the welding materials. CONSTITUTION:An electrode 1 is inserted to the central part of the groove of a start tab 6; a flux is filled in the groove, and an arc is generated between the electrode 1 and the tab 6 to melt the flux, whereby molten slag 2 is formed. At this time, the outflow of the slag 2 from the end parts of the groove is prevented by a back copper shoe 8 and a front copper shoe 9, and the flux is supplied until the molten slag 2 contacts with the bottom end of groove faces 4. Thereafter, the electrode 1 is moved upward and the upper groove faces 4 of the slag 2 are melted successively, whereby the welding is shifted upward while molten metal 5 is formed in the lower part of the slag 2.
