Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound of high purity without discharging the waste water, by decomposing and removing the excess chlorosulfonic acid in the reaction product of chlorobenzene with the chlorosulfonic acid, dissolving the excess chlorosulfonic acid in an organic solvent, washing the solution with a small amount of water, and reusing the resultant waste water in the decomposing step.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction product of chlorobenzene with chlorosulfonic acid is dropped to water or dilute sulfuric acid metered to give the sulfuric acid concentration of 60W90% in the sulfuric acid layer after completing the decomposition of the excess chlorosulfonic acid to decompose the excess chlorosulfonic acid, and the formed hydrogen chloride is driven out of the system. A chlorobenzenesulfochloride (chlorobenzenesulfonyl chloride) layer is then separated from the sulfuric acid layer into a liquid state at 50°C or above, dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. hexane, washed with a small amount of water and purified. The waste water after the washing with water is reused as a water component in decomposing the excess chlorosulfonic acid or as the water component in preparing the dilute sulfuric acid used for the similar purpose.
