Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve airtight and conductive contact, prevent mixing of gases, and decrease an internal resistance by applying an expanded graphite layer as a packing material to be used on a jointed surface of a divided gas separator plate. CONSTITUTION:A unit cell comprising anode and cathode gas electrodes and an electrolyte matrix is stacked with a gas separator plate made of carbon interposed in between to fabricate a fuel cell. A gas separator plate made of carbon is replaced on every several cells with a cooling plate 7 which is formed by jointing divided gas separator plates 8, 8 and forming a cooling path 9 on this jointed surface, and gas supply slots 5', 6' for hydrogen gas and air are respectively arranged on both upper and lower surfaces of the plate in the same way as other separator plates to form this cell. An expanded graphite layer 10 is interposed in a shape of sheet between jointed surfaces of the separator plates 8, 8 to maintain airtightness and conductivity between the jointed surfaces.
