Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the transfer voltage change caused by a change of temperature and to increase the driving margin, by using the chiral nematic or cholesteric liquid crystal containing a components having the right and left swivel twisting force respectively in the liquid crystal composition. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal display element having an orthogonal orientating direction 7 between polarizing plates 11 and 12 is made of the liquid crystal group obtained by adding a CR-15 component having the right turn twisting force and a CB-18 having the left swivel twisting force (shown by the formulas, respectively) to the nematic liquid crystal E-7 as the liquid crystal compositions. Such display element has a twist structure 10 when no voltage is applied and has a vertical orientation 18 when the voltage is applied, respectively. Thus a liquid crystal display is obtained with a reduced change of the transfer voltage caused by a change of temperature and a wide range of working temperatures.
