Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a ferroelectric liq. crystal compd. which has an Sc* phase temp. of about 50 deg.C to room temp. or below and ensures high practicability and high-speed response, and which comprises a mixture comprising at least two types of compds. represented by particular formulae. CONSTITUTION:A ferroelectric liq. crystal compsn. comprising a mixture of at least two types of compds. of formula I (wherein R1 is a hydroxyl group or a group of formula II, R2 is a 1-20C alkyl chain; R3 is a group of formula III, IV, V or VI; and C* is an asymmetric carbon). This liq. crystal compsn. has ferroelectricity and a chiral smectic C phase (Sc* phase) temp. of about 50 deg.C to room temp. or below, in particular 70--20 deg.C in the case of an esp. suitable combination. Accordingly, the compsn. per se is suited for use in actual applications, and can be used in various fields as a low power display element. For example, a compsn. comprising an acetic ester of formula VII and an acetic ester of formula VIII is wt. proportions of 40/60 exhibits an Sc* phase at -22-63 deg.C, so that there is obtd. a ferroelectric liq. crystal exhibiting an Sc* phase suited for use in a display panel at -20-60 deg.C.
