Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture β-type silicon carbide in a high yield by adding a prescribed percentage of Fe, Co, Ni or oxide thereof to silicon oxide and calcining them.
CONSTITUTION: To silicon oxide powder is added powder of Fe, Co, Ni or oxide thereof such as ferric oxide by 0.5W3mol% as Fe, Co or Ni, and this mixed powder is wet mixed with a ball mill and dried. The dried mixed powder is put into a carbon tube and heated to 1,500°C in a vacuum furnace to manufacture silicon carbide. The product is then roasted at 650°C in air to remove excess carbon, and by further treating the product with a strong acid such as hydrofluoric acid, unreacted silicon oxide and other impurities are removed by dissolution to manufacture the desired β-type silicon carbide powder. This β-type silicon carbide is 2W3 times as high as silicon carbide contg. no said additive in yield.
