Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve polarization characteristics and durability by using a mixture of ethylene tetrafluoride-propylene hexafluoride copolymer in powdery form and poly-ethyhene tetrafluoride in form of suspension in water as a bonding agent for a gas diffusion electrode emplolying carbon powder. CONSTITUTION:A gas diffusion electrode is produced by providing on a porous nickel plate 1 which faces an electrolyte side a catalyst layer 2; a connecting layer 3 made of ethylene poly-fluoride and an ethylene tetrafluoride-propylene hexafluoride copolymer; and a porous thin film 4 of poly-ethylene tetrafluoride. The catalyst layer 2 is made of carbon powder 2a containing silver; and as a bonding agent a mixture of powdery copolymer 2c of ethylene tetrafluoride and propylene hexafluoride with an aqueous suspenson 2b of poly-ethylene tetrafluoride is applied. The poly-ethylene tetrafluoride 2b partially covers carbon powder 2a, while the polymer 2c is filled in spaces among particles.
